Doug was born in the Virginia suburbs just outside Washington D.C. His interest in art was sparked at an early age when his grade school classes would take trips to visit the National Gallery of Art. He continued his explorations of art in middle and high school by pouring over art books and taking as many art classes as he could.

After a successful 22 year career in the high tech industry, Doug decided to return full time to his first love, painting.

Doug’s favorite subject is the landscape. “I am fascinated with the endless variety landscapes present. Each day, a particular place is different, not only because the light has changed or because something has moved, but also because I am different every time I observe a particular scene.”

“I am not interested in accuracy or in depicting visual details. Rather, I like to express how a particular place makes me feel by focusing on form and color with particular attention to the tension between light and shadow. I want to express the totality of what I’m painting and the range of emotional responses that the scene evokes within me.” To accomplish this, he paints quickly, primarily with the palette knife, building layers and textures in some places and allowing the texture of the canvas to peek through in others.

Doug travels throughout Europe and the U.S. for inspiration and subject matter. He studied fine art at Northern Virginia Community College. In addition, he has a Bachelors degree in Liberal Studies from Georgetown University and a Masters degree in Teaching from Seattle University. He has studied painting independently with several painting instructors in the Seattle area.
