Donald Flather

Dr. Donald Flather was a multi- talented man who combined his love of the outdoors with his love of art to produce many wonderful works. Although a teacher by vocation, he dedicated a great deal of his life (circa 1919-1990) to his painting and developed his own unique style which combines elements of French Impressionism and the Group of Seven.

Dr. Flather was a colleague of Lawren Harris, founder of the Group of Seven and the two men worked together for several years on the executive of the Federation of Canadian Artists, of which Dr. Flather was an original and founding member.

After growing up in the Shuswap Lake region, Donald M. Flather came to Vancouver in his twenties, at which time he began to paint more in his free time. He and his lovely wife Grace raised a family of three boys, Elwood, Barrie and Verne- all of whom went on to become medical doctors, raising families of their own.

Dr. Flather's works show a wonderful combining of his roles of teacher, botanist, biologist, scientist and painter, and successfully integrate his knowledge with his art. One of his greatest wishes was that others be able to view and enjoy through his paintings the world as he saw it- full of beauty. His paintings are now widely held in collections in Canada, Asia, Indonesia, the USA and the UK.

Dr. Donald Flather était un homme multi-talentueux qui combinait son amour de la nature et de l'art pour produire plusieurs oeuvres merveilleuses. Enseignant de vocation, il a dédié un grande partie de sa vie (1919-1990) à la peinture et a développer un style unique qui combine des éléments de l'impressionnisme Français et du Groupe des Sept. Dr. Flather était un collègue de Lawren Harris, fondateur du Groupe des Sept, et les deux hommes ont collaboré pendant plusieurs années sur le comité exécutif de la Fédération des Artistes Canadiens, duquel Dr. Flather est membre Fondateur. Originaire de la région du Lac Shuswap, Donald M. Flather arrive à Vancouver dans ses vingt ans, où la peinture prend plus d'envergure dans ses loisirs. Il fonde une famille avec son épouse Grace; Il fut père de trois garçons Elwood, Barrie et Verne qui sont tous devenus médecins et qui, de leur part, ont tous fondé des familles. Les oeuvres du Dr. Flather démontrent l'influence de ses passions pour l'enseignement, la biologie et son travail de botaniste et elles témoignent de l'intégration de ses connaissances et son art qu'il effectue avec brio. Un de ses plus grands voeux était de pouvoir communiquer aux gens le monde, tel qu'il le vois: Plein de beauté. On peut retrouver ses oeuvres dans plusieurs grandes collections au Canada, en Asie, en Indonésie, aux États-Unis et en Grande Bretagne.
