Jennifer Weber

Born and raised in Ontario, Jennifer’s first art instruction began as a teenager when she joined her mother for evening oil painting classes. This experience taught her the foundations of constructing a scene and building up the layers. She didn’t pursue the arts in her formal education but ventured to the skies and was rewarded with her pilot’s license. Her working career ended in the mid 90’s with the start of a family. A chance meeting with an artist in 2003 in her new town of Courtenay on Vancouver Island initiated a change and a future within the arts community. For three years, Jennifer actualized her dream of having commercial space for creating and showcasing her work by collaborating with 4 other professional artists to establish Art Alchemy, a studio/gallery in Courtenay, BC which still operates without her involvement. Currently Jennifer is exploring the medium of wax, both hot and cold, aiming to build a new body of work to feature.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

I paint for aesthetics… creating images that my eyes want to travel toward time and time again…’eye candy’, a visual manifestation that is pleasing. I begin by painting with random colours in a free and unintentional way. This is a great way to loosen up my body and my mind. This may continue for several layers until I am ready to begin to map out a scene, drawing lines and shapes. Lately I have been choosing reed-like structures, or tree forms that have a body resemblance. By painting with random colours I am hoping for those happy accidents to happen. In order for most of the paintings to really come together though, there has to be some purposeful choices made…and this both challenges me and provides my biggest opportunity for growth as an artist, to learn about colours and how they relate to one another.
